Deck the Halls at the Greensburg Public Library

We're decking the halls at the Greensburg Public Library all through the month of December! The Children's Room is decorated and ready to welcome visitors with visions of Christmas books, Christmas movies and music, and festivities dancing in their heads.

The library hopes to be on everybody's "nice" list this year and be part of your holiday fun. You can start by checking out some books from our Christmas collection which is available in the month of December. Our titles include picture books like How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss, Beginning Reader books like The Little Christmas Tree by Mercer Mayer, and board books for our youngest readers like Disney Babies: Merry Christmas. For older kids we have Christmas chapter books from classics like The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson to newer titles like Ann M. Martin's On Christmas Eve. Christmas poetry books and even Christmas joke books are available. There are various Christmas craft books on hand for kids who want to make some presents or help trim the tree with some homemade ornaments. If you missed a Charlie Brown Christmas on television this year don't worry, the library has it available on dvd and video along with lots of other old and new Christmas classics. No Christmas is complete without lots of holiday music. Christmas music of all types is available in the Holiday section of the library's compact disc collection. If you don't have children or grandchildren to entertain this year you're not going to be left out – The Adult area of the library also has many wonderful Christmas titles in book and movie form. So come on in and check us out.

This year the Children's Room will be hosting a Gingerbread Christmas program for families as well as several craft programs for school age children. The Gingerbread Christmas program will be held on Saturday, December 8, at 10:00 am and will include crafts, games, storytelling, refreshments, and a visit from Santa Claus himself. Currently, registration for this program is full. You may call the Children's Room at 663-4455 to inquire about being placed on the waiting list. School age kids will find plenty to keep them busy at the library while waiting for Christmas to come. The Children's Room is planning three separate craft programs the week before Christmas. Kids can make a gift for their teacher on Monday, December 17 at 5:00 pm. On Tuesday, December 18 at 5:00 pm they can make a decoration for their house. And on Thursday, December 20 they will get to choose from a selection of Christmas crafts to make and take home. Registration is required for all of the programs. So call 663-4455 or stop by the Children's Room for more information or to get registered. If you're a crafty adult the library will also be offering a craft day for you on Saturday, December 8 at 2:00 pm. Participants will be able to paint a Christmas scene on a glass plate or goblet. So come try your hand at making something special for your holiday table. The fee is $2.00 to cover the cost of supplies.

Sometimes Christmas preparations are too much for kids and everyone just needs a break. The library is a great place to come and spend some quality time together reading, playing at the Lego table, or with the Children's Room new kitchen set (If only the kids would remember to shut the refrigerator door when they're finished!). There are also six computers available for playing computer games, doing homework, or research on the internet.

The community of Greensburg and Decatur County is fortunate to have access to all the books and other materials available at the Greensburg Public Library at no charge. But it is also important for people, especially children, to have books of their own at home so they can read and be read to anytime. So in the spirit of giving, the library hopes you will consider giving the gift of reading to a child this Christmas season. The library will be collecting new and very gently used children's books for the Cheer Fund. They will be distributed to less fortunate children within Decatur County. Donations will be accepted through Thursday, December 13.

The staff of the Greensburg Public Library, the Westport Branch, and the Bookmobile wishes everyone a very safe and joyful holiday season. Please visit us soon so we can wish you a very Merry Christmas in person. See you at the library!
