Library Prepares for Upcoming Holiday Celebration

Lori Durbin, event coordinator for the Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Greensburg - Decatur County Public Library are planning a Festival of Wreaths fundraiser to benefit the library and others in the community.

We are inviting various groups and organizations to contribute a holiday wreath that reflects the mission or purpose of their group. Each group will have free reign over the size and type of wreath they create or use and the way it is decorated. We expect to have some wreaths that will make you "ooh" and "ahh" and some that will make you chuckle, but we know that each one will be unique and special. We are asking churches, clubs, businesses, non-profits and other groups and individuals to participate.

We will display each wreath at the library by December 1 and will hold a silent auction from then until the clock ticks down to 8:30 pm on December 11. At that time the bids will be collected and the wreaths distributed to the proud purchasers. The wreath contributor will receive a check from the Friends of the Library for 50% of the auction price and the Friends will keep the remaining 50% for upcoming library programs and purchases. It is our hope that this will be a fun way to raise additional funds for the Friends of the Library and other organizations. Individuals may contribute a wreath and designate a non-profit organization to receive the donation. The wreath donors will be listed with the wreaths along with the name of the groups that will benefit.

On Thursday, December 11, 2008 from 7-9 p.m. we will hold an open house event complete with refreshments, music, a make and take craft, and a silent auction on the wreaths. The library will be decked out in holiday style for the event with special holiday displays of books, DVDs and music. There will be Christmas cookie recipe booklets available for purchase and door prizes will be awarded to those who attend the event.

This fundraiser will be a fun way to celebrate the holiday, earn money for and promote community groups and to help support the Friends of the Library - all at the same time!

Letters have been sent to local groups, churches, organizations and businesses asking them to join the fun. If you belong to a group or are an individual that might be interested, please contact Lori Durbin at the Library at 663-2826 or send an email to ldurbin@greensburglibrary.org. Each group or individual must fill out an entry form to participate.
