Spring is just around the corner and this means we expect our yearly rush on travel books to begin! After all part of the fun of traveling is in planning and thinking about it.

If you are like my family, gas prices will have an impact on your travel plans for the year. But, there are many fun places to visit here in Indiana that will help keep your travel budget under control. And of course, I always start my planning here at the Library by looking in the online catalog (www.greensburglibrary.org) to see what resources are available.

The first book I came across is Day Trips from Indianpolis by Helen O'Guinn. Her book divides the state into various sections and details several mini-tours in each area. One of her southern tours visits Jeffersonville, Clarksville, New Albany, Greenville, and Starlight. In Jeffersonville she recommends visiting the Howard Steamboat Museum and Mansion and then visiting Schimpff's Confectionery for a sweet treat. The Schimpff family has been in the candy business since 1891!Then on to Clarksville for a stop at the Falls of the Ohio State Park, one of the largest Devonian fossil beds in the world. From there on to the Culbertson Mansion in New Albany and the Huber Family Farm and Orchard in Starlight. This is just one of the many fun tours featured in O'Guinn's Indiana travel guide.

Fun with the Family in Indiana by Margaret Gisler looks at places of interest to children and families. The author says it is written by a parent for parents and has "the best things to see and do to keep the kids busy . . ." It features amusement parks, zoos, hiking trails, festivals, and much more.

My Indiana:101 Places to See by Earl Conn is a visual feast of Indiana travel destinations some well known, others are well-kept secrets.Conn writes a column, "Traveling Indiana", for the Muncie Star Press and his book is a compilation of past columns.Written in a conversational style, it features facts and information in an entertaining format.

Wendell Trogdon has written a series of books featuring Indiana.Trogdon says his grandsons call him "the man who never saw a road he didn't take" and he has visited every nook and corner of Indiana.According to the author, Incredible Indiana:Scenic Splendor, Awesome Wonders, features "Indiana's most awesome scenes, the overlooks from steep cliffs, the panoramas from elevations, the majestic landscapes and the quiet beauty of dense forests so deep into woods that a minister jokes the sunshine has to be piped in."This is just one of the many Trogdon books about Indiana the library has to offer.

The Insiders' Guide:Indiana Off the Beaten Path by Phyllis Thomas is a fun-filled travel book packed with Indiana trivia.Did you know the only car to complete the Indy 500 without a pit stop was a Cummins diesel powered car in the 1931 race? Or did you know that Orville Redenbacher popcorn was originally named Red Bow popcorn? This is just a sampling of the interesting trivia to be found in this guidebook.Off the Beaten Path is actually a series of travel guides known for featuring unique, "road less traveled" sites.

These are just a few travel resources the library has to offer. We also have copies of the Indiana 2008 Travel Map, the Indiana 2008 Festival Guide, and the 2008 Indiana Recreations & Fishing Guide which you can take home and keep for use all year.

Visit the library soon and let your vacation planning begin!
