In the last library column, I focused on ways the library could help you save money. A new book just came across my desk on that same topic and I am sure that many of you will find it of interest. It is Free Money, Free Stuff:the Select Guide to Public and Private Deals, Steals, and Giveaways by Reader's Digest. This book is a treasure trove of ideas on ways to save money or find freebies. I read it over the weekend and plan to check out several of the websites listed that offer coupons and free consumer information. This is a book that I know will be popular and therefore will probably soon have a waiting list, but just call or visit the library and we will be glad to contact you as soon as it is available. Another new book is Free Money for Entrepreneurs by Matthew Lesko. This is the latest offering from Lesko, author of several books that focus on ways to find free money for individuals or businesses. If you are interested in owning your own business, this book offers information to help you find startup funds.
May I follow up just a bit more with you on the idea of saving money at the library? Every year in January, we compile statistics and evaluate how the outgoing year was in terms of service to the community. Here are just a few tidbits I would like to share with you. In 2007, Library patrons checked out 167,620 books, 54,850 videos, 6,553 magazines, and 7,551 audio books. The number of items checked out totaled almost 240,000. One thing that always surprises me is that usage of our public computers continues to rise every year.In 2007, our computers were used 24,340 times! The library also presented 657 programs with attendance totaling 15,707. And our meeting rooms were used by outside groups 410 times in 2007. You might wonder how all that transmits into saving money at the library.
Just think how much the cost would be to purchase 167,620 books or to rent 54,850 videos. In the past couple of years, value calculators have become popular in the library community. This type of calculator looks at how much a type of item such as a book is worth in the marketplace and totals the value of usage by the community. Using a typical library value calculator, in 2007 the library provided services worth over $3 million. This was another great year for the library and in turn the community. Our staff works very hard to provide you with quality services, interesting programs, and a great selection of materials.
