If you follow the business news you will know it is full of gloom and doom. The unemployment rate just hit five percent and experts are debating whether the economy is headed into a recession. For many people this may be the time to take a close look at their finances and start pinching those pennies a bit harder. I know many people who are now clipping coupons to help get costs down.

Using the library is actually a bit like clipping coupons and not the save fifty cents variety, more like the free ones! When you visit the library, you can check out items free of charge personally, I think the library qualifies as the best bargain in the county!

If you are a bargain hunter, here are just a few suggestions on what you might find at the library. Did you know we subscribe to 215 magazines and newspapers? If you like to read newspapers from other locations, then visit the library. We subscribe to The Wall Street Journal; New York Times (Sunday edition); USA Today; Columbus Republic; Indianapolis Star; Cincinnati Enquirer; and the Louisville Courier-Journal. So, if you want news from other areas or simply want to see what movies are playing in Columbus, simply visit the library!

No matter what your interests, we have a magazine for you! We subscribe to all the standards including Time, Newsweek, People, Good Housekeeping, etc., but we also have an eclectic variety of others from which you can choose. Here is just a sampling of titles:This Old House; Mother Earth News; Motor Trend; The Herb Companion; Kiplinger's Personal Finance; Dog Fancy; Cat Fancy; Every Day with Rachael Ray; Fine Woodworking; Forbes. Something for everyone! The current edition of a magazine can't be checked out, but the older ones go out for a week. The cost of an average magazine is $4.00 so, just visit us at the library and check them out for free.

Now let's talk about videos for a minute. Did you know that we buy quite a few of the newer popular movies? Ones that we have added in the past thirty days include Hairspray; Ocean's Thirteen; The Bourne Ultimatum; and Waitress. But we really do take pride in providing alternatives to the ones you can find in the video stores. We have many armchair travelers who visit the library and we are always purchasing new travel videos. New ones include Hidden Turkey, Stupendous Shanghai, and for Disney lovers, Disneyland Secrets, Stories, and Magic. A new video that I think you might enjoy is season one of the top-rated Animal Planet series Meerkat Manor, which claims to be a "natural-born reality show with a wild difference."Sicko by the Academy Award winning filmmaker Michael Moore takes a hilarious, but scathing look at America's healthcare system. We also have many of the older television programs on video. One of our newer additions is I Dream of Jeannie, the complete first season, which is a fun treat for nostalgia buffs. These are just a few of the many videos you can check out free of charge at the library.

And of course we have books! I just checked the New York Times Best Sellers list and we have all of the fiction books listed including Double Cross by James Patterson; T is for Trespass by Sue Grafton; Playing for Pizza by John Grisham; The Choice by Nicholas Sparks; and Home to Holly Springs by Jan Karon. Non-fiction best sellers on our shelves include Boom by Tom Brokaw; Quiet Strength by Tony Dungy; The Nine by Jeffrey Toobin; The Age of Turbulence by Alan Greenspan; and Jim Cramer's Stay Mad for Life by Jim Cramer. This is just a sampling of the many books you can check out for free with your library card. The average cost of a new hardback book is $25.00 why buy the newest bestseller, when all you have to do is visit the library!

For do-it-yourselfer's, the library can now help you save money on auto repairs. The Chilton's automotive repair books have always been well used at our library, but with so many different automobiles on the market, it was difficult to keep our books up-to-date and ensure we had what you needed. The library recently subscribed to Chilton Library.com. This online version of the Chilton manuals provides photos, diagnostics, step-by-step repair information, wiring diagrams, recalls, and Technical Service Bulletins for automobiles and light trucks. Simply visit the library computer lab to for this easy-to-use database or if you have a home computer and a card from the Greensburg Library you can even access it from your home.

The Library can provide for your recreational and informational needs and save you money in the process. What a deal! Hope to see you soon at the Greensburg-Decatur County Public Library!
